Why Do We Cheer for the Hero?

I was watching a movie earlier this week and wondered, "Why do we love heroes so much? What is it about their courage and bravery in the face of impossible circumstances that causes us to cheer for the hero?"

That led me to write this — a list of characteristics of heroes (there are seven of them). Here they are:

1. Heroes are unexpected.
2. Heroes are unknown.
3. Heroes are ordinary.
4. Heroes become heroes through adversity.
5. Heroes show up at the 11th hour.
6. Heroes push through fear.
7. Heroes fight for others.
